Facilitator - Mike Hastings

The 2019 Audubon report Survival by Degrees: 389 Bird Species on the Brink concluded that two-thirds of North American birds are at risk of extinction due to climate change. Five years later, the 2025 State of Birds Report data indicates both a continued cause for alarm and signs of hope. This class will examine 7 examples of birds who have experienced severe population decline and encouraging recovery.

We will explore how a combination of birds' natural resilience and human intervention results in dramatic increase in the population of Bald Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Whooping Crane, California Condor, Kirtland's Warbler, Pileated Woodpecker, and Piping Plover.
