On the Road: Photographing America in 1955

Class | Registration opens Friday, January 16, 2026 12:00 AM

In 1955, two photographers, Robert Frank and Todd Webb, set out on separate journeys across America after receiving Guggenheim Fellowships. Frank traveled by car, while Webb explored on foot, by skiff, and bicycle. Frank’s images, published in the groundbreaking book The Americans, reshaped the visual language of photography and captured a raw, candid view of mid-century life. Webb’s photographs, in contrast, remained unseen for decades, offering a rediscovered perspective on everyday America when they surfaced in 2016. In this class, we’ll revisit both projects to uncover what they reveal about photography, storytelling, and the American experience in the mid-1950s.
