In the 20th century, social dictates of the time made it a terrible disgrace to bear an out of wedlock baby. The pressure on unwed mothers and poor families to give up their babies for adoption was nationwide, as women were forced or tricked into giving up their babies. Georgia Tann, from Tennessee, was notorious for stealing babies and children from their poor biological parents by any means necessary and selling these children to wealthy ‘parents’. She used her connections with the powerful and well-connected socialites to get away with her crimes for three decades.
