Death customs vary widely across cultures and history, but Victorian era customs were definitely interesting and sometimes even down right creepy! Join us to learn about Victorian personifications of Death as we cover everything from banshees to black dogs including strange deaths from poisoned stockings and gloves; the role of undertakers and grave diggers; typical headstones and their symbols; the many uses of crape; the custom of wakes and watches; photographing the dead; society’s expectations for widows and widowers; and why some of the dearly departed returned as ghosts. Your instructor is excited by this fascinating topic…and she promises not to scare you too much!
