Gerrymandering: What It Is, and Why You Should Care
Class | This class has been canceled
Gerrymandering, election reform, and whether voting districts are fair or unfair are issues are in the news. It’s being discussed in town halls, and will be on the Michigan statewide ballot in November 2018. In this course, we will use presentation and discussion to learn about gerrymandering and how it got its name, as well as how the current gerrymandering protocol creates political divisiveness, destroys cooperative compromise, and is unfair to voters of all political persuasions. We will explore judicial, legislative, and nonpartisan citizen initiatives in various states, including Michigan, to replace legislative gerrymandering with an independent, citizen-based redistricting process. We will also cover why some people and organizations want to retain the current gerrymandering protocol. This course will present both sides of the redistricting/gerrymandering issue, with the goal of raising awareness to help Michigan registered voters be more knowledgeable about this ballot initiative when they vote in November.
