Celebrate Memorial Day by learning about the experience of a real Barry County soldier who fought in the Civil War. Using a set of 60 transcribed letters sent home during his service, the story of William Henry Wheeler will be told through the eyes of his great-great-grandson and your instructor, Brian Shumway. Wheeler was a Woodland Farmer of the 26th Michigan Volunteer Infantry (MVI) who fought with the Army of the Potomac alongside 13 other "Woodland” boys. Wheeler and the 26th MVI will be discussed, as will other Woodland and Barry County men of other regiments, particularly Leonard Fitzgerald, the namesake of Hasting's Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Post. A brief history of the Memorial Day holiday will also be included.
