Are you looking for a way to open up conversations about social justice with your students? Are you hoping to facilitate open, honest opportunities for students to discuss challenges in our larger society? It can be difficult to talk with students about issues such as racism, poverty, human rights, and global warming, but we must. Over the past few years, the presenters have implemented a variety of approaches for engaging students in understanding social justice grounded in Global Citizenship and Literacy curricula. Join Arlyn and Kathy as they walk you through strategies to bring the concept of social justice to life in age-appropriate, thoughtful, and meaningful ways.

Participants will:
· Review a curated list of social justice picture books.
· Practice discussion strategies and protocols to use in your classroom tomorrow when addressing social justice topics.
· Review samples of technology integrated projects that support student learning targets and outcomes.
· Access resources to support the design of social justice projects that foster student interests, independence, and growth.
· Understand ways to engage in an equity audit of your classroom and/or school library.

This is a two day series. Participants must attend both days.

  • You will receive the Zoom link in a confirmation email a few days before the workshop. We must receive a payment or a purchase order from you prior to the event in order to give you access.
Bruccoli, Arlyn

Arlyn Bruccoli is the Librarian and Technology Integration Specialist at East Montpelier Elementary School. Her love of dinosaurs, anthropology, and children led her to pursue a Master’s of Science in Education at Bank Street College with a concentration in museum education. After working for the American Museum of Natural History’s National Center for Science Literacy, Education, and Technology, Arlyn joined the VT Dept. of Education as the Technology Integration Specialist. She still loves dinosaurs, but has found that being a librarian and technology integrationist allows her to explore EVERYTHING through the intersection of library resources, robotics, and the curiosities of elementary school students.

Christy, Kathy

Kathy Christy, M.Ed., has over 35 years of experience working in public schools as an elementary school teacher, literacy coach and professional development facilitator. She has a wealth of experience providing professional development in a variety of settings at school, district, and collegiate levels.
