Target Audience:SLPs, special educators, classroom teachers, and paraeducators working with students with complex communication disorders, i.e., autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy
This workshop is designed to equip professionals with the knowledge necessary for providing comprehensive literacy assessment and intervention for students with complex communication disorders.
Participants will:
Discuss and review current evidence-based methods for assessing the literacy comprehension of students with complex communication disorders. This includes but is not limited to:
· Identifying informative assessment tools, as well as what works and what doesn’t.
· Adapting functional assessment tools to meet the needs of any communicator.
· Assessing writing, including understanding what is considered writing and the evidence to collect in order to assess it.
· Understanding and interpreting phonological assessment as it relates to students with complex communication disorders.
Engage in learning about, discussing, and practicing various intervention strategies, including:
· The benefit of teaching spelling as a strategy for increasing communication flexibility.
· The diversification of teaching materials as a strategy for advancing literacy skills and supporting student progress.
Participants will gain a stronger understanding of the relationship between comprehensive literacy skills, verbal communication ability, and literacy as a supplemental communication skill.
