This is a recording of a live virtual workshop, originally held on March 31, 2020.
Executive function skills refer to brain functions that manage attention, emotions, and behavior in the pursuit of goals. Young children rely on these skills to follow a sequence of instructions for daily tasks, while older children need these skills to “break a task down” into a sequence of steps as the demands for independent learning increases.
This practical workshop will provide strategies to teach learners to think in an organized way, control impulses, and manage emotions. Participants will define how lagging executive function skills impact students as they mature, as well as learn how to promote the development of executive function skills by weaving them naturally into everyday activities. In addition, participants will use existing class lessons and/or formulate plans using the "Get Ready-Do-Done" Methodology.
Participants will learn strategies to help students to:
· Improve situational awareness and self regulation skills, transition to follow routines, and requisite materials with less supervision and prompts.
· Improve working memory to initiate and complete tasks, as well as process information.
· Visualize simple, multi-step and complex tasks, then sequence and plan to fully complete work.
· Develop problem solving and critical thinking skills to manage their belongings and space.
· Begin to feel and internalize an accurate sense of the passage of time.
Whether executive skills are new to you or not, participants will walk away with new and updated interventions and handouts that are instantly usable upon return to the classroom, clinic, or home.
