This training is designed from current research on the key components and protective factors that foster resilience in children who are contending with a wide variety of stressors, including: developmental trauma, mental health challenges, intellectual and learning variations, developmental disabilities, and chronic adversity within their environment. Dr. van Lent and Dr. Boudreau will identify key elements and approaches for creating environments in which children can thrive. The training will include an in-depth discussion of the impact of early neglect and trauma on a child’s development, specifically the child’s ability to form healthy relationships, respond to context, engage in learning, and develop a positive self-concept. In addition, the training will offer a comprehensive framework and set of skills in mindfulness techniques and their utility in increasing trauma sensitivity. The strategies and techniques presented in this course can be applied universally and as Tier I interventions to benefit all students in the school community.

Participants will attend four workshops, along with an additional course meeting date, with online individual work between sessions.

January 13: Understanding Trauma and Building Resiliency by Addressing Fear in School Systems

February 3: Relationships with Students and Ourselves: Building a Secure Base for Learning

March 16: Emotional Regulation and Mindfulness in Schools

April 7: Unlocking Cognitive Clarity: Addressing Executive Functioning and Implicit Bias in Schools

May 4: Final Course Meeting Date

  • Participants will earn 3 graduate credits from Castleton State University upon completion of this course.
