Target Audience: Special educators, related service providers, mental health professionals, para-educators, and parents.


This two day workshop is designed to prepare participants to collaborate effectively in order to address the complex needs of children with significant challenges. The content is important for all educators, but essential for those professionals working with children whose needs are intense and complex.

Participants will:
· Learn how to form productive teams;
· Grow their understanding of roles and responsibilities of the case manager and other team members;
· Develop goals and priorities as a team;
· Learn how to effectively support and utilize para-educators; and
· Navigate difficult conversations and resolve conflicts as they arise.

This is a two day workshop - you must attend both days. Lunch is included.

These workshops can also be taken as a 1 credit graduate level course by attending both workshops, and completing additional reading and assignments. To participate for credit, please register under the COURSE offering.

Lyford, Alicia

Alicia Lyford is the principal of East Montpelier Elementary School where she has been for the past five years. Before being a school leader, Alicia was a special educator in Montpelier, working with students in grades K – 8.

Wilcox, Joy

Joy has worked for the VT-HEC since its inception. Currently Joy coordinates the Special Education Endorsement program and is an instructor of graduate courses in that program. She supervises practicum students and is member of the VT-HEC Operations Group. She has been a Consulting Teacher/Learning Specialist for over 30 years.
