This course will address the diagnostic assessment and corresponding remediation of learners with varied subtypes of reading difficulties. Participants will learn how to use a combination of formal and informal assessment results to pinpoint the exact barrier and/or core deficit interfering with reading development.

This information related to the 'why' of the literacy challenge will then be linked with appropriate, corresponding interventions for each of the various subtypes. Goal development for IEP/EST plans and data collection/progress monitoring systems will also be thoroughly addressed. Multiple case studies will be used for explanation and application of the material covered.

The course is based on a developmental model vs. a grade level model. The focus of the assessment/intervention will be for foundational skills (K-6), but there are students in the upper grades who still struggle back in these levels so the content may still be appropriate.

Participants will attend four workshop throughout the school year, as well as complete online additional work between workshops.

Workshop dates:
- November 16 : Understanding reading development and struggling reader profiles
- December 6 : Assessment, intervention, data analysis for phonemic and orthographic awareness
- January 17 : Assessment, intervention, data analysis for phonics and fluency
- February 13 : Assessment, intervention, data analysis for comprehension

  • If you choose to take one or some of the workshops (not as a course for credit), please register individually under each WORKSHOP option.
  • If you choose to take all four workshops (but not as a course for credit), search for and register by using the "Series Discount" option button for a discount.
