Clinton Historical Society President Cynthia Koch describes the lives of four Clinton women who broke barriers to pursue influential careers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Amanda Deyo, Ophelia Shadbolt Amigh, her granddaughter Nina McCulloch Mattern, and Helena G. Van Vliet all left Clinton, New York, to make their marks in the larger world of international peace activism and the ministry, the reform movements for “delinquent” girls, women’s suffrage, and nursing education in China.
Cynthia Koch
Cynthia Koch, Ph.D. is President of the Town of Clinton Historical Society where she is leading the restoration of the historic Creek Meeting House, built 1777-80. She is also Historian for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Foundation at Adams House, Harvard University. Cynthia was Director of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, and from 2013-2016, she taught public history at Bard College.
