Beginning Nordic Pole Walking
6-weeks | Registration opens 8/28/2026 9:00 AM EDT
Nordic Pole Walking is a low-impact exercise system offering numerous benefits for seniors including improved balance and stability; reduced stress on joints (like knees); strengthened muscles through full-body engagement; and better cardiovascular health. This type of exercise is also known to help with chronic pain, mood, weight management and mobility.
All walks will take place on level ground and established walkways and are adaptable to individual ability and comfort levels. Walks will not exceed two miles, and participants may turn back at any point.
The first session will focus on learning basic technique and will be held at the Vassar Noyes House Field. Sessions two and three will be guided walks beginning at the Morgan Lake Trailhead (approximately one mile), and session four will begin at the Morgan Lake Trailhead and continue to the Walkway Over The Hudson (approximately two miles). Locations for sessions five and six will be announced later.
Note: Participants are encouraged to consult with their physician before beginning the course. Participants must provide their own Nordic Walking poles, available through online retailers and some sporting goods stores. For safety and effectiveness, quality poles are recommended; you should expect to pay between $50 and $100 or more per pair. Participants unfamiliar with Nordic Pole Walking may find it helpful to watch introductory instructional videos available on YouTube prior to the first session.
