Paris in the Nineteenth Century, Part 1: 1800–1850

4-weeks (first 4) | Registration opens 2/14/2026 9:00 AM EST

This is the first of a two-part course devoted to the history of Paris in the nineteenth century; it covers roughly the period from 1800–1850. (The second part of this course will be taught in Fall 2026). The course hopes to convey a sense of the almost bewildering variety of activity in the “City of Light,” and so we consider as many aspects of this topic as possible: politics, music, literature, art, architecture, technology and more, all within the dynamic context of a rapidly changing city.
