Argentinian Cinema

6-weeks | Unavailable

Argentinian cinema is one of the major film industries in Latin America, along with Brazil
and Mexico. The military dictatorship of 1976-1983 that was responsible for the
“disappearance” of over 30,000 people deeply affected this industry, which, for at least a
couple of decades, dealt with understanding the historical trauma the nation had
undergone. In the 1990s a new cinema developed, searching to reimagine the past and
the future in different directions. In this course we are going to view six films, often
dealing with reimagining the nation and its larger Latin American context. Class will be
conducted in English.
We will view the following six movies in original Spanish with English subtitles:
- Camila (1984) by María Luisa Bemberg
- The Official Story (La historia oficial) (1985) by Luis Puenzo
- Nine Queens (Nueve reinas) (2000) by Fabián Bielinsky
-The Secret in your Eyes (El secreto de sus ojos) (2009) by Juan José Campanella
- Lost Embrace (El abrazo partido) (2004) by Daniel Burman
- Wild Tales (Relatos salvajes) (2014) by Damián Szifron
