Basic Legal Process for Non-Lawyers

4-weeks (last 4) | Registration closed 9/1/2024

This class is intended to help non-lawyers better understand legal developments in the news by explaining basic legal terms and procedures. Issues to be discussed will include the structure and operation of the American legal system, the sometimes duplicative and sometimes contradictory functions of state and Federal courts, the differences between trial courts and appellate courts, the role of precedent in legal decision making and the meaning of legal terms such as jurisdiction, standing and forum shopping. Each session will include time for a general discussion of current legal developments of interest to class members.

 

Norman Abrams

Norman Abrams is a retired lawyer. He was Senior Associate General Counsel of AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company and General Counsel of its subsidiaries, AXA Advisors, LLC and AXA Distributors, LLC. He is a graduate of Brandeis University (BA), Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (MA) and Harvard Law School (JD).


Maribeth King

A registered nurse for forty-six years, Maribeth King graduated from the University of Michigan (BSN) and Boston University (MS - nursing). She holds licenses in New York State as a registered nurse and clinical nurse specialist and is certified as a clinical nurse specialist in oncology (AOCNS). Maribeth has practiced at the University Hospital (Ann Arbor), Beth Israel Hospital, Shriner's Burns Institute (Boston), Henry Ford Hospital and Sinai Hospital (Detroit). For the past thirty-two years she has been a nursing administrator at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. She is also a published author on a variety of topics.
