The Habsburg Dynasty

Class | Registration opens 7/20/26 10:00 AM

How did the family of a Swiss count who built a small castle in 1020 grow to become one of the most powerful dynasties in world history? Learning about the Habsburgs offers a masterclass in how a minor Swiss noble family built a global empire. Their history spans over 600 years of weddings, wars, and genetic triumphs and downfalls, leaving a lasting footprint on the geopolitical map. Their reach extended from Europe to the Americas and the Pacific. We will trace the Habsburgs rise by examining both the Austrian and Spanish branches. Luminaries to be discussed include Rudolph II, Charles V, Philip II, Franz Joseph, Archduke Maximilian, and Maria Theresa, the only female leader and mother of Marie-Antoinette. We will also highlight the Habsburg legacy of major contributions to the arts and culture.

The class will be lectures with accompanying visuals, and class participation will be encouraged. Weekly preparation time should be 30-60 minutes

Margaret Dergalis (Habsburg)

Art and history have both been lifelong interests.  Following my secondary and university studies, I have continued to expand my knowledge of world history.  I began taking art history and studio painting classes in high school, and by observing my late husband, George Dergalis, I was able to see the creative process from its inception to fruition. I’ve teamed up with Margalit Lai to teach four prior courses on world leaders and taught The Art of the Northern Renaissance in the spring 2026 semester.
