3Thu-2C-5b: A Primer on Prime Numbers

Class | Registration opens 1/19/26 10:00 AM

The ancient Greeks studied prime numbers. Since that era, we have learned interesting facts and characteristics of primes. Nevertheless, there are still open questions about primes that haven’t been answered.  Also, why are prime numbers important and relevant in these modern times? We will study these numbers and explore the questions during the five-week course. A mathematics background is not required to benefit from and enjoy this course - you just need the ability to count and recall some basics from your high school algebra course.

The class will be lecture and demonstration, with weekly questions to be solved by the class.  Preparation time should be less than an hour each week on homework problems.

I am an actuary by profession but also enjoy the lighter side of mathematics.  I have led courses on recreational mathematics, the history of math, and cryptography, all of which touched on this topic of prime numbers in some manner.
