3Thu-3D-10: The Birth of Modern Painting: 1900 - 1950
Class | Registration opens 1/27/25 10:00 AM
This course explores groundbreaking painting styles that emerged in Europe and North America during the 20th century. From the innovations of Cubism to the emotional power of Abstract Expressionism, participants will examine the key artists and ideas that redefined the boundaries of painting. The course also will explore the historical and cultural contexts that influenced these changes and the techniques/styles employed by leading artists. Through a chronological exploration of pivotal developments, these ten sessions provide an overview of modern art, focusing on painting from the early experiments of the 20th century to the bold and abstract works of the mid-century.
The course will consist of presentations and discussions. Each participant will receive by email a syllabus prior to the first session. Participants are asked to watch two videos and read one text article (total time about 30-45 minutes) before each session.

I am a retired computer programmer. Living in the Boston area, I am fortunate to have been able to take more than 20 art history courses over the past 20 years at Wellesley College, Boston University, and LLIAC. These include Introduction to Art History I and II, Greek Art, Medieval Art, Chinese Art, Renaissance Art, Venetian Renaissance Art, Northern Renaissance Art, Northern Renaissance Art Seminar, "Grand Tour" Art, "Ekphrastic" Art, Victorian Art, Mexican Art, and American Art. I've also been lucky enough to have spent a great deal of time looking at art in (I guess) more than 100 museums and churches in the United States and Europe.
